Biography

Dr. Febi Varghese is Post Graduate in Engineering (M.Tech-First Rank), Business Administration (MBA) and Doctorate (Ph.D) in Management Studies and done the Executive Development Programme on Corporate Governance from Indian Institute of Management and completed the course on Advanced Productivity Tools and Techniques from APO, Japan. He has worked as the Managing Director of Kerala Minerals and Metals , Kerala State Coir Corporation, KERAFED , Kerala State Coconut Development Corporation, Kerala Soaps and Oils,etc. Dr.Febi has also worked as Financial Analyst : United Nations and Director : Coir Board of India.

Having 25 years of Professional and Managerial experience, Dr.Febi has headed and turned around various Public Sector Undertakings and has been a Keynote/Invited Speaker to many International Conferences held in Japan, Korea, Malaysia, etc. He is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of Institution of Engineers (India) and recipient of Management Excellence Award and presently serves as Member of Standing Committee on Promotion of Exports, Govt. of India.

Abstract

Belonging to one of the oldest plant families, the coconut palm is found throughout the tropics Coir Fibre is a natural bio degradable fibre extracted from the fruit of the Coconut Palm tree (Cocos nucifera) . Coir is very hard and highly resistant to abrasion. It is used to make durable floor mats and floor coverings and vide range of other eco-friendly products including geo-textiles which is now being extensively used for soil protection. Due to its peculiar characteristics, Coir is the hardest and the only natural fibre resistant to salt water which makes it suitable for marine applications also. Important Characteristics of Coir Fibre and its major applications are highlighted.
